These are the reasons I love this breed

For today’s blog I wanted to feature these beautiful birds! They are so amazing to have for several reasons & if you love chickens (especially floofy ones) then here are some reasons why you may too want to add these salmon fatties to your flock!

PERSONALITY

Faverolles have a very docile demeanor. This makes them a wonderful chicken for people who enjoy spending close up time with their chickens as well as family’s with small children. Because of this amazing personality, they are often picked on by more aggressive breeds and do best with other mild mannered chickens. These birds are super goofy and you will never get tired of watching their fluffy butts run around your homestead!

DUAL PURPOSE

Another positive quality of having these birds is that they are large fowl and can develop faster & fatter to be a good meat bird! By no means comparable to the timing of Cornish cross, but they are large enough to be able to butcher around 24 weeks (standard for heritage breeds). The meat quality is favorable to most and if you are breeding for quality such as I am, it’s desirable knowing your culls can go to freezer camp!

WINTER LAYERS

Faverolles are known to be great layers in the winter which is very nice as most breeds are not! This breed could be the breed to add to make sure you get steady production year around!

FEATHER SEXING

As a breeder, I LOVE the fact that you can feather sex these birds at about 3 weeks of age. It makes it extremely helpful not having to wait several months to know if you have a cockerel or a pullet. If you hatch out heavy on cockerels, you’ll know soon if you need to hatch more to try and balance ratios! Customers can also get accurate sexed chicks earlier from you!

EGGS

Last but not least, I love the eggs these guys lay. They lay brown eggs, but if bred correctly, they can lay an egg that looks pink! They can be the missing piece you need to having ever egg color available!

I hope you enjoyed learning some more about this heritage breed and why I find it so dear! Come back next week for more and thank you for reading!
