Luke 18:16 says, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these”. In this day and age, I feel it is easy to be swept up with distractions. If you are anything like me, you are guilty at times of prioritizing social media, hobbies, work or countless other things over your kids. If this sounds like you too, then you probably also feel that gut wrenching guilt that will creep through to let you know to snap out of it. I call it the Lords gentle nudge. So here are some things that I do to help keep me present with my kids.
Put Your Phone Out of Sight
This may sound like a no brainer, but it may not be to some. At times I don’t think we realize how much time we can truly spend on our phone. We may justify it because we are talking/texting with family or friends which is great and we should do that. However, if it takes away too much of our time, we should opt to put it down and out of sight so it isn’t tempting to fall into the habit again.
Morning Bible Study/Devotion
This will always help to put myself in a stronger mindset that aids me to be more patient and present through my day with anyone I encounter. The Lords teachings keep me grounded and focused on what is important. Even on the run, a morning prayer could be vital to helping to organize your thoughts so that your kids can benefit all day long from it’s affects.
Teach Them Something
Is your kid getting into the random bag of chocolate chips in the pantry? Teach them to make cookies! Won’t stop coloring on the walls? Color with them on print outs! I love to print out my favorite bible verses for them to color and practice afterwards ! Once you see that your child is a literal dry sponge READY to absorb knowledge, then you will understand if they are bored they have to take learning into their own hands. Beat them to the punch and keep their little minds busy and if you can, join them! They will appreciate your presence while learning new skills!
Focus On The Details
This may come naturally to some, but if it doesn’t to you, what I find helpful is to focus on the details of my kiddos. Memorize their rolls on their arms and legs. Lock in on the brightness of their eyes and their beautiful long lashes. Cherish the way they “talk” or walk or laugh. These, especially the more kids you have, become precious moments that will leave you wanting to be present and freeze time. We can’t do that mommas, but we can choose to be present in the moment.
I hope these helped bring to light some ways you can be present with the ones you love dear! Thanks for reading and see you next week friends!
